Maltese is a small breed of dog in Toy group, known for its long silky white hair. But many owners give them a short "puppy cut" for ease of grooming.


Maltese has almost the same look with Bichon Frise. Just that Maltese is smaller in size while Bichon is larger.

History and Origins
Maltese is one of the small dog breeds that is descended from dogs originating in the Central Mediterranean Area. They are one of the oldest dog breeds. The origin of the breed was dated at 6000 BC. The dogs probably made their way to Europe through the Middle East with the migration of nomadic tribes.


Group
Together with Pomeranian and Pekingese, Maltese is categorized under Toy Group by both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and The Kennel Club (UK).


Living Condition
This is a toy breed that is suitable to live in an apartment or condominium. They only need small spaces in the house to run around.


Exercise
Every dog needs exercise and Maltese should not be exceptional. Before training a Maltese puppy, it is advisable to give them some exercise. It has proven that exercise together with Maltese puppy training, it will enhance his learning ability.


You should take your dog on a 45 minutes daily walk. If you dog lacks of exercise, it might have healthy problems and develops some other dog behavior problems.


Shedding
All dogs shed. Maltese sheds little compare with other long-coated breeds. It is believed to be a hypoallergenic dog breed which some people with allergic might find themselves okay to own this breed.

General Appearance
The dog has slightly rounded skull, drop ears, dark and round eyes and a black nose. The body is compact and length almost equals the height. Legs are fine-boned and nicely feathered and the tail is bushy and over the back.


Coat and Color
The coat is long, silky and lacks an undercoat. The hair hangs over the sides of the body. The color is pure white and other colors such as cream or light lemon are not so desirable.

Weight: 3.0 - 7.0 pounds (1.4 - 3.0 kg)

Characteristics/Temperaments and Energy level
Maltese are fearless dogs and very easy to socialize with other dogs and even cats. They are affectionate and love time with their owners. They are among the gentlest mannered of all toy breeds.


They are extremely lively and playful and energy level remains fairly constant even when they ages. They are very good with children and infants and do not require much physical exercise. They do well with apartment and townhouses.


Although Maltese is an gentle dog breed, obedience training a Maltese puppy is still needed. Obedience training is used to communicate with your Maltese on what he can or can not do in your house.
