Big Dogs

These dogs are huge but they are kind and gentle. There dogs are sweet too, so, you could safely leave your children with these dogs and they will be doing fine.


Don't get cheated with the size of this animal, they are the masters of long-distance swimming. They are great swimmers because they have thick, oily and waterproof double coat. They also have muscular muscle and heavy large bones that are able to handle the rough ocean waves and powerful tides. Their massive webbed paws further contribute for the effective strokes.


Newfie has the lifesaving instincts in the water. History has showed that this dog breed has saved many lives. This is one of the highly trainable dog breed because they are intelligent. You need to exercise Newf daily to maintain his muscle strength. You are also required grooming this dog at least once per week to keep their coat tidy.

As the name suggests, Newfoundland dog breed is originating from Newfoundland. They have many nick names such as Newf, Newfie, The Gentle Giant and Blackbear. They are working dogs that are famous for their excellent swimming skills. They are giant in size and has great amount of strength but in the same they are sweet and loyal. Their strength is comparable with Mastiff, Great Dane and Irish Wolfhound.


History and Origins
Newfoundland dog breed is believed to be a native breed from Newfoundland. Their huge size could be due cross with large mastiffs that were brought to the island by many generations of Portuguese fishermen in 1400s. About 200 years after that, the characteristics and appearance of the crossing of 2 breeds have resulting of today’s Newfoundland dogs.


Group
Newfoundland dog breed, together with Siberian Husky dog breed and Doberman Pinscher dog breed, is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and The Kennel Club (UK) under Working Group.


Living Condition
Because of the size of this animal, I would recommend to get this dog only you have a landed house that has at least a small yard. They are ok with apartment, but without freedom to walk around, they will be bored.


Exercise
Newfoundland dog training can be easily conducted together with exercise. Exercise is used to keep your dog fit and healthy while drain up extra energy of your dog.


After your dog has less energy and your dog might feel hungry as well. That is the best time to train your dog as he is willing to do anything you ask in order to get the food treat.


Remember that dog is NOT supposed to be confined in your house, even if you have a big yard in your house. You should take him out for daily walk and also give him house training (See: House Training a Puppy Guide). Lack of exercise and training will likely cause your dog to develop dog behavior problems in later years.


Shedding
They shed twice a year. You will have to groom Newfie at least once per week to keep his coat clean.

General Appearance
This breed has broad, heavy and massive skull. Eyes are dark brown. Ears are relatively small and triangular with rounded tips. The neck is strong. His body is big and muscular.


Coat and Color
The coat is double, flat and water-resistant. Their outer coat is moderately long with or without wave-like. The undercoat is soft and dense.


Colors are usually black, brown, gray, or white and black.

Height: 26.0 - 28.0 inches (66.0 - 71.1 cm)
Weight: 100.0 - 150.0 pounds (45.4 - 68.0 kg)

9 - 15 years

Newfoundland Dog is sweet and gentle, and good with children. They are also courageous and intelligent which make them the dogs that are eager to save people in the water.


These dogs are loyal and trustworthy which can be good watch dogs. You should give your Newfoundland dog training so that he will reach his full potential.


Newfie is sociable dog breed that can get along with people and other animal very well.
