Big dog breeds are the most special creatures in this world. These big dogs are truly men's best friends because they have been helping human in many ways since many centuries ago.

For example, Border Collie are the world's best sheep herding dogs. According to a scientific research, each Border has the stamina and energy to do the herding work equivalent to 3 human beings! These dogs really have the best herding instinct that can control sheep better than most men.

German Shepherd Dog (GSD) is another big dog breed that is not only men's best friend but also policemen's best friends. They have been recognized as the best police dogs. Although their original work was herding sheep, their strength and intelligence have made them succeeding in many other tasks. GSD is the third most intelligent dog breed that has the ability to learn simple tasks after only five repetitions and obey the first command given 95% of the time. They have been helping police in search and rescue operation, tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas, and detection and holding of suspects, illegal drugs detection, mine detection and more.


As you see here, big dogs are types of dogs that have many enrollments with human, while contrast with small dogs which just kept as pet, companion or fashion accessories.


Nowadays, it is not uncommon that some of the modern big dogs are kept as pets or companions. But for them to live comfortably in human's environment, they require some training such as house training, crate training, potty training, and obedience training.

There are still many ways these big dog breeds can assist human in today's World.

For examples:
Guard Dogs - Help to protect private or public properties.
Police Dogs - Track or immobilize possible criminals while assisting officers in making arrests or investigating the scene of a crime. They are also called as K9 Units.
Detection Dogs - Help to detect illegal substances in luggage at major Airport.
Assistance Dogs - Help people with disability(such as blind).
Herding Dogs - Guarding or controlling the flocks and herds.
Sled Dogs - Used for Sport events or assist human in transporting supplies in rugged, snowy terrain.
Search Dogs - Locate people that are missing (lost in the jungle, buried under the collapsed building and etc.)
Rescue Dogs - Assist people in difficult situations such as help people buried under snow.
Hunting Dogs - Assist hunters in finding, tracking, and retrieving game.

Small dogs are cute, adorable, and mostly good with children. These small dogs have the ability to adapt easily into any environment like apartment or condominium makes them good companion dogs.

Generally, small dog breeds are types of dogs that can be considered as Toy Dogs or Companion Dogs. These small dogs are called Toy Dogs because they are recognized by Kennel Clubs under Toy Group. They are relatively small that can be kept in the house, to be held in the arms or lie comfortably on a person's lap. This is the reason that they are also called as Lap Dogs.


Over the centuries, these small dogs were kept in many societies around the world as a companion with no working function. They are mainly kept by the wealthy or the nobility as pets, fashion accessories and status symbols.


For examples, the Pekingese lapdogs that were bred in ancient China is one of the oldest breeds of dog. For centuries, they could be owned only by members of the Chinese Imperial Palace. Ancestors of a few other small dogs like Tibetan Terrier, Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu were also have the same functions like Pekingese lap dogs in ancient China.


In other part of the world, English Nobility kept the small dogs which were the ancestors of the modern breed of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the 1600s. It was named as King Charles Spaniel because it was the children's pet in the household of Charles I. You may also notice this dog appeared in many paintings of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.


There are also some dogs that are small but are NOT categorized as toy dogs. Beagles are small to medium size dogs that are in hound group. Hound group is for dogs that have good sense of smell or good sight. On the other hand, Shih Tzu is put under Utility Group by The Kennel Club (UK) as the Kennel Club considers them to be too large to be in Toy Group.


All these dogs are small size, but don't be surprised that they can be more aggressive then some of the big dogs if they are not properly trained. So, in order for them to live comfortably in human's environment, you will need to give them training such as house training, crate training, potty training and obedience training.
